Writers' Rooms

By Daryll Lynne Evans, Contributing Blogger

Having trouble organizing your writing? Check out this cool link to a special feature of The Guardian called "Writers' Rooms."  It shows pictures of writers' rooms and brief essays in which the featured writer talks about her writing space and how it works for her. Several debates rage through the author room descriptions, including having the desk face the window or the wall (Hilary Mantel—wall; Graham Swift—window, but he put a shade up!), as well as a clean desk versus chaos (Ian Rankin—messy; Margaret Drabble—messy; A. L. Kennedy—no desk at all). Many talk about their writing habits as an added bonus. It's a very interesting look into this beast called the writing life. I also noted that many, many authors have a significant touch of red in their rooms, and I'm off to buy a new red something, probably a rug.

Thank you for finding this, Daryll Lynne! How interesting it is to see the "enlightened disarray" from which Graham Swifts amazing novels come!
