What a Title
In the news of celebrity books, Rupert Everett, the openly gay actor whom you might remember from such films as My Best Friend's Wedding and A Midsummer Night's Dream, has published a "candid autobiography" entitled Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins. Now, I know that the general rule in the world of "real" writers is to mock and tear down the lame attempts made by celebrities to foray into writing. And I generally fully support this rule. I make the requisite gag noises when I pass Jewel's A Night Without Armor in bookstores. I laughed along with the world at Nicole Richie's The Truth About Diamonds.
And yet...
This book sounds so entertaining. It's like a year's worth of Us Weekly's wrapped up in one tidy little package. Unlike most celebrities who are afraid to criticize or reveal anything about their crazy little bubble of a world, Everett seems perfectly willing, even eager, to do just this. For instance, his take on movie stars:
...blobs who don't say anything, aren't allowed to say anything. They are paid to shut up.
And hey, his editor says
I think what people will be really surprised about is the writing...It's not just another celebrity book.
Here's hoping. Read more about it here.
